I am an amateur collector and enthusiast, interested in Johnston Atoll. On this site you will find my private-collection of objects from JA's history. I encourage you to write to me if you have stories to share, information to correct, or objects to donate or sell to the collection. Thank you to everyone who has shared their knowledge and experiences with me.
Johnston Atoll sits alone in the Central Pacific Ocean. It lies at 16°44'13"N, 169°31'26"W and can be found approximately seven-hundred and fifty nautical miles southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii.
An ‘atoll’ is a ring-shaped coral reef that forms around the crater of a submerged volcano. Johnston Atoll (JA) is an American-owned territory composed of four islands, maintained in the present day as a wildlife reserve for it’s nesting seabirds and unique reef ecosystem. For seventy years (1934 - 2004) the territory was utilised by the military of the United States of America, as an isolated base for sea and air navigation and refueling; and later utilised for nuclear weapons testing and chemical weapons storage and disposal.
Much of Johnston Atoll’s history has been lost at sea with remnants remaining in museums, archives and online. The Pacific Rock aims to contribute to the restoration and preservation of the Atoll’s history and its involvement in the major global events of the twentieth century. With hope of recollecting some of seventy years of history that has been scattered to the wind and to celebrate this tiny dot in the Pacific.

- John Muir
